Discovery.Me

This will be a blog focusing on my journey discovering new hobbies, crafts, and ways of self expression. Though I will be focusing on learning to draw I invite anyone to share whatever journey they happen to embarking on regarding any subject or medium. I will be learning most of these things from 0 and working up to my 10,000 hours to master them and share my trials and tribulations.

Let's talk about the name of the blog and this post for a minute to get a better understanding of why I am here, and why you should be. In computer programming .exe is used to identify an extension of something. This is at the end of "Discovery" because my desire is to move past simply picking up something in my free time and instead immerse myself  in worlds undenounced to me and make them my own.

ME

From a young age I grew up in a very strict Catholic school, rulers slapping hands and all. For kids in this school dreams of owning a bakery, becoming an artist, or being an actor were not permissible, we would all grow up to be doctors, lawyers, or dentists if we were so unlucky. This mindset stuck with me until I had decided I'd had enough and its about time I expanded my mind a bit, and that bring us here.

So what exactly does Discovery.Me mean? This is the hope that through pushing myself outside my comfort zone and into new worlds I discover parts of me I can learn to love and share with all of you. Starting something new is terrifying, but if we do it together I'm sure our successes and failures can compound and teach us something special in hopefully under 10,000 hours.

In this blog I will search for various methods to learn to draw, try them all, and share those experiences no matter their weight on my progress. I encourage you to share what you are learning and perhaps even learn from others in this space.

As you can see i am starting from the very basics of art while learning from instructors over at Skill Share. If you have time to discover something new I highly recommend checking them, outstanding instructors and materials (more on this in the next post)

As this was mostly about the blog and what you can expect from it if you want to know more about me then you can find me easiest on Twitch where you can learn about my personality and ask me anything you like!

  1. Hello and nice to meet you! I really like the setup that you have going for your blog. Discovering new things about ourselves is very exciting but also very scary. I have also wanted to try to get into drawing myself so maybe we can try to get into a new hobby together!

  2. This is a great idea to build community and skills! I love art but have always avoided painting because I wasn't immediately great at it, but I recently got a library book that teaches painting. I am so glad you shared Skill Share as a resource because I had no idea it existed. I look forward to seeing your work!

  3. It is so refreshing to see someone struggle through the stages of learning something new. I think we all can relate to the first time we tried something new and the feelings of uncertainty or even embarrassment. I am a Spanish minor and I remember my first conversations with a native speaker. I was scared they would laugh at me if I said something wrong or incorrect. They were so warm and welcoming. I think this is going to be a great place for people to recieve that warm welcome into a new craft.
